Visiting Gjirokaster in May
# Gjirokaster in May: Worth the Trip?
May is honestly one of the better times to show up in Gjirokaster, and I say that as someone who’s been there in the sweating hell of August and wished I’d timed it differently.
The weather sits in that genuinely pleasant middle ground – warm enough to walk the cobblestones without a jacket by midday, cool enough in the evenings that you’ll want a light layer when you’re sitting outside with a glass of wine. Temperatures hover somewhere in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius most days. Rain is a real possibility though. May can be unpredictable up in these mountains – you might get four gorgeous sunny days followed by a grey, drizzly afternoon that rolls in fast. It’s not monsoon territory, but don’t come expecting guaranteed sunshine and don’t pack only sandals.
The crowds are at a genuinely manageable level. The summer rush hasn’t arrived yet, so you can actually stand in front of the castle without fifteen tour groups surrounding you. The Old Bazaar feels like a real place rather than a tourist corridor. Guesthouses have rooms available without booking six weeks ahead, and prices are more reasonable than peak season.
Everything is open. The castle, the Skenduli House, the ethnographic museum – they’re all running normally by May. Restaurants are operating properly rather than the skeleton service you sometimes encounter in winter.
**Who is this month actually for?** History people, architecture people, slow travellers who want to sit in the old bazaar and absorb something without feeling rushed. It’s not for beach holiday seekers – Gjirokaster is never that. It’s a serious, slightly melancholy, utterly beautiful city, and May lets you experience that without the summer circus.
**One practical tip:** Wear proper shoes. Not trainers, not flip flops – something with actual grip. Those Ottoman cobblestones are uneven and can be slippery after rain. More tourists twist ankles here than anywhere I’ve seen. Comfortable walking shoes with real soles will save your trip.
Go. May is a solid choice.
