# Gran Canaria in February: The Honest Version

February in Gran Canaria is genuinely one of the more interesting times to go, but not necessarily for the reasons travel sites tell you.

**What’s the weather actually like?**

Unpredictable, frankly. The south around Maspalomas tends to sit around 19-22°C, which sounds lovely until you’re sitting in a stiff Atlantic wind that makes it feel noticeably colder. You’ll see people in bikinis next to people in puffer jackets and both will be correct. The north around Las Palmas runs cooler and wetter. Rain is possible any day, though it usually doesn’t last long. Don’t book expecting guaranteed sunshine, but don’t expect misery either. It’s genuinely variable.

**Crowds**

This is peak season, no question. Northern Europeans fleeing winter descend in numbers, particularly Germans and Scandinavians. The south gets busy. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés feel lively rather than overrun, but you won’t have the beach to yourself. Carnival also happens in February, which transforms Las Palmas into something genuinely spectacular and chaotic. If you want that, perfect timing. If you want peace, be aware.

**What’s open**

Everything. This isn’t a shoulder-season situation where half the restaurants have a closed sign. Restaurants, water parks, excursions, all fully operational. It’s one of the busiest months commercially, so nothing gets mothballed.

**Is it worth going, and for whom?**

Yes, with realistic expectations. It suits people escaping northern winters who just want some milder air and a change of scenery. It’s excellent for older travellers, couples, and anyone who finds August beach tourism exhausting. Carnival-goers will have a brilliant time. Surfers will find decent Atlantic swells. It’s less ideal if you’re a sun-worshipper banking on guaranteed pool days or a budget traveller hoping for quiet-season prices.

**One practical tip**

Book accommodation in the south early, particularly around Carnival weekend. Prices spike sharply and availability genuinely disappears. Everything else you can be relatively spontaneous about, but not that.
