# Heraklion in October: What It’s Actually Like
October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Heraklion, but probably not for the reasons travel websites will tell you.
The temperature sits around 20-21°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and honestly it mostly is. You’re not melting through the Archaeological Museum wishing you’d worn less, and walking around the Venetian harbour in the evening actually feels pleasant rather than punishing. The sea is still warm enough to swim comfortably for most of the month, particularly early October, which remains surprisingly beach-friendly.
The 45mm of rainfall means you’ll likely encounter a few proper downpours, usually arriving as short, dramatic afternoon storms rather than grey drizzle stretching across the whole day. Pack a light rain jacket and don’t let a dark sky at 2pm make you abandon your plans – it’ll often clear by 4.
Crowds drop noticeably compared to August’s absolute chaos, but Heraklion isn’t exactly deserted. The Minoan palace at Knossos still draws coachloads of visitors, particularly on cruise ship days, so going early or late afternoon still matters. The Archaeological Museum, genuinely one of Europe’s best and criminally underrated, becomes properly enjoyable rather than a sweaty endurance test. Restaurants are fully operational, the local market along 1866 Street is busy with actual Cretans shopping, and you’ll find accommodation prices meaningfully lower without things feeling abandoned.
**Is it worth it?** For culture, food, and getting a real sense of the city rather than just its tourist surface, October is excellent. If your priority is guaranteed beach days and a party atmosphere, you’ve missed that window. This is the month for people who want to eat well, walk the old city without constantly dodging selfie sticks, and feel like a functioning human being rather than a lobster.
**One practical tip:** Knossos gets flooded with cruise passengers between 10am and 1pm. Arrive when it opens or after 2pm and you’ll have a genuinely different experience.
