# Himarë in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About
Honestly, September might be the best kept secret for visiting Himarë, and I say that as someone who’s done the sweaty August pilgrimage and deeply regretted it.
The weather settles into something genuinely pleasant around 23°C, which sounds modest until you remember that August turns this stretch of Albanian Riviera into a slow-roasting nightmare. September air has an actual quality to it. You can walk the old castle hill without arriving at the top looking like you’ve been hosed down. The 20mm of rainfall across the month is nothing to worry about – you’re looking at maybe two or three brief afternoon showers, the kind that cool everything down and then vanish. Pack a light layer for evenings because the sea breeze gets real after 8pm.
**Crowds** drop significantly after the first week. The Albanian summer holiday crowd largely clears out by early September, and Western European tourists thin out noticeably by mid-month. You’ll still find people – this isn’t a ghost town – but you can actually get a table at Rapo’s Resort or any of the waterfront spots without that desperate hovering energy that defines August dining.
**What’s open:** almost everything, which matters. Restaurants, boat rental guys, the pebble beach bars – they’re all still running and actually want your business. Come October and things start shutting down unpredictably. September is that comfortable window where the infrastructure is intact but the pressure is gone.
**Is it worth it and for whom:** absolutely yes, especially if you’re not a family locked into school holidays. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who prefers a conversation over a crowd. Swimmers will find the Ionian still genuinely warm. Hikers eyeing the coastal paths toward Gjipe beach will have a far better time than in brutal summer heat.
**One practical tip:** rent a car before you arrive, not there. September is when every remaining visitor suddenly wants wheels and local options get thin fast.
