Honestly? It depends entirely on what you’re after — and I mean that more than I usually do when people say that.
Let me start with what genuinely works. That beach is the real deal. Ten kilometres of clean, wide, golden sand with warm Atlantic water and reliable sunshine for most of the year. If you want to switch your brain off, plant yourself in a sun lounger and actually relax without gambling on the weather, Agadir delivers consistently in a way that much of Europe simply cannot. The climate alone makes it a serious contender for a winter escape when London or Berlin are making you miserable.
Taghazout, about 20 minutes up the coast, is legitimately excellent. The surf scene there has matured into something special without fully losing its soul yet. If you ride waves or want to learn, this stretch of coastline punches well above its weight. Souss-Massa National Park is also genuinely underrated — flamingos, bald ibis, dramatic coastal scenery. Worth half a day easily.
Now for the honest part, because a good friend wouldn’t skip this.
Agadir itself, the city centre, is aesthetically flat. The 1960 earthquake essentially erased the old city and what was rebuilt feels functional rather than characterful. If you’re coming to Morocco hoping for labyrinthine medinas, rooftop riads and centuries of atmosphere baked into the walls, you will be disappointed. This is not Fes or Marrakech. The marina and promenade area feels designed for package tourism because it largely was — lots of chain restaurants, familiar comforts, nothing that makes you feel like you’ve properly arrived somewhere foreign.
The crowd situation is real too. Peak season gets genuinely hectic on that beach, and the promenade can feel more like Benidorm than North Africa. Mid-range budget is accurate — you won’t eat and sleep cheaply the way you might elsewhere in Morocco.
**The verdict:** Agadir is worth visiting if the beach and surf are your primary motivation, or if you want guaranteed warmth with Morocco as a pleasant backdrop rather than the main event. Use it as a base and explore outward. Go to Taghazout, get into the national park, consider day-tripping to Tiznit or the mountains.
But if you want the soul of Morocco? Fly somewhere else and come here for the weekend.
