Honestly, Ankaran doesn’t get talked about much, and that’s partly the point. Tucked into a small peninsula just across the bay from Koper, this is Slovenia’s most overlooked coastal spot, and depending on what you’re after, that’s either its greatest strength or its fatal flaw.
Let’s start with the beach, because that’s what most people come for. For Slovenia, it genuinely is the best swimming spot on the coast. The water is clean, the setting is pleasant, and compared to the chaotic summer crush you’ll find at Portorož, it feels almost peaceful. But keep your expectations honest here. We’re still talking about the Adriatic at its narrowest point. The “beach” is largely concrete platforms and imported pebbles. If you’re arriving from Croatia expecting Dalmatian coves, you’ll feel a little shortchanged.
The converted monastery complex is legitimately interesting. It’s now a resort and conference centre, but the bones of the old Benedictine monastery are still visible, and wandering around the grounds costs you nothing. The olive groves surrounding the complex give the whole area a genuinely Mediterranean atmosphere that feels earned rather than manufactured. Local wine and olive oil are worth picking up, both are good quality and cheap by any Western European standard.
The coastal walking path to Koper is a highlight that barely gets mentioned anywhere. It takes roughly an hour, it’s flat, and it gives you views back across the bay that are quietly beautiful in the early morning. Do this before breakfast and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered something private.
The honest disappointments are real though. Ankaran is small to the point of feeling slightly hollow. Evening options are thin. The restaurant scene is limited, and outside of summer, several things close entirely. There’s no real town centre with that lively, lived-in feel you get in Piran or even Izola. You can exhaust the main sights in a single afternoon, which makes it a difficult sell as a standalone destination.
**The verdict:** Don’t make Ankaran your only stop. But if you’re doing a slow loop of the Slovenian coast, spending a night or two here as a quieter, cheaper base makes genuine sense. It rewards people who want simple pleasures, good swimming, and zero crowds. It will frustrate anyone expecting atmosphere or nightlife.
