Let me be straight with you. Most people treat Bari as a place to sleep before catching a ferry or as the city they drive through to reach Alberobello or Polignano a Mare. That instinct isn’t entirely wrong, but it does miss something genuinely special hiding inside those old walls.
**The Old Town delivers.** Wander into the Barivecchia on a morning and you’ll find actual nonnas sitting in doorways, rolling orecchiette by hand on wooden boards. This isn’t staged for tourists. They sell bags of fresh pasta for a couple of euros and couldn’t care less whether you’re impressed or not. It’s one of the more authentically human things you’ll witness in southern Italy. The Basilica di San Nicola is legitimately beautiful and carries real religious weight – pilgrims come here seriously, which gives it an atmosphere most tourist churches completely lack.
The seafood is exceptional and genuinely cheap. Raw sea urchin, mussels, fried everything. Eat at places with plastic chairs and handwritten menus near the port and you’ll spend almost nothing for something memorable.
**Now the honest part.** Bari itself is a fairly rough, working port city. Parts of it are gritty and slightly chaotic. The new town is unremarkable – think functional Italian streets without much charm. The old town, while atmospheric, is also quite small. You can cover it thoroughly in half a day. If you’re expecting Lecce-level beauty spread across an entire city, you’ll feel a bit shortchanged.
The ferry situation to Greece and Montenegro is genuinely convenient, making Bari a logical transit point. But connecting logistics can mean awkward layover hours in a city that doesn’t offer endless things to fill them with.
**The budget angle works strongly in your favor here.** Accommodation is cheaper than coastal Puglia towns, food costs very little if you eat locally, and the main attractions are either free or nearly free. If you’re traveling on a tight budget through southern Italy, Bari actually rewards you more than somewhere like Positano, where your money evaporates.
**Verdict:** One full day in Bari, maybe a night. That’s your sweet spot. It’s worth visiting rather than skipping entirely, but it’s not a destination you build a trip around. Come curious, eat well, then move on without guilt.
