Go early before the boats pile in from Agios Nikolaos and you’ll have something approaching a genuinely atmospheric experience.

If you’re expecting a charming, characterful Greek town with great tavernas on every corner and real local life, you’ll be underwhelmed. Private pools, impeccable positions on the bay, genuine peace. If you’re staying at one of these, Elounda absolutely works. The resort becomes your world and it’s a very comfortable world.
But here’s the thing – if budget is any kind of consideration, Elounda makes little sense. You’re paying premium prices for isolation. The isolation is real, which means if your hotel disappoints, there’s not much else to fall back on.
**Verdict:** Go if you want a luxury retreat built around calm water, total relaxation and the Spinalonga day trip. Don’t go expecting a vibrant destination with depth and discovery around every corner. Elounda is essentially a beautiful backdrop for expensive hotels done well. Treated as that, it genuinely delivers. Expected to be more than that, it quietly lets you down.
