Nafplio is one of those rare Greek towns that hasn’t completely sold its soul to tourism yet. The old town is legitimately beautiful — neoclassical buildings in warm ochre and terracotta, narrow pedestrian streets, bougainvillea doing its thing on every corner. Walking around at dusk feels like something from a different century, and that’s not an exaggeration. Greece’s first capital after independence has real architectural bones, and you can feel it.
**The Palamidi fortress is the real deal.** 999 steps up (yes, people count them), and the views over the Argolic Gulf are genuinely worth the sweaty climb. Go early morning before the heat turns it into a punishment. The Venetian Bourtzi, the little fort sitting on its own island in the harbour, looks spectacular from the waterfront. Getting out there by boat is pleasant enough, though once you arrive, the interior is fairly underwhelming — it’s mostly atmosphere, not substance. Manage expectations accordingly.
The old town is perfect for wandering without an agenda. Good restaurants, relaxed cafes, a few decent museums.
