April is shoulder season on Ischia, and honestly, that’s mostly a good thing with a few caveats worth knowing before you book.

The weather sits around 18°C, which sounds pleasant until you factor in that the sea breeze off the Tyrrhenian can make it feel noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings. Pack layers you’ll actually use. You’ll get around 30mm of rain across the month, typically arriving as proper showers rather than all-day drizzle, so mornings often look bright while afternoons turn moody. It’s not beach weather in any serious sense. If you’re picturing yourself on the sand at Cartaromana with an Aperol Spritz, you’re about two months early.

What April does give you is the island without the chaos. The crowds that make August feel like a humid queue for everything simply don’t exist yet. You can walk through Ischia Ponte and actually look at it. The thermal parks, particularly Poseidon Gardens and Negomonte, start opening in April though hours are reduced and some sections remain closed until May. The gardens at La Mortella open properly this month and they’re genuinely spectacular in spring, which is reason alone for certain visitors to come.

Restaurants and hotels are waking up rather than fully operational. Some smaller places are still closed or running limited menus. Ferries run but less frequently than summer. The island has a slightly sleepy, getting-ready energy that some people find charming and others find frustrating, depending on what they came for.

Who should visit in April? Hikers, garden enthusiasts, thermal spa devotees who want to actually relax rather than share a pool with hundreds of people, and anyone who finds packed Mediterranean islands exhausting. Couples exploring independently will love it. Families expecting beach holiday mode might feel underwhelmed.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in advance anyway. The island has fewer rooms open in April, and the good mid-range places fill up faster than you’d expect given the quieter season.
