# Istanbul in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Istanbul, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.
The weather sits around 21°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. You’ll be comfortable walking the hills between Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu without sweating through your shirt, which matters more than you’d think in a city that demands this much walking. Evenings cool down noticeably, so bring a light jacket you don’t mind carrying around all day. The 43.7mm of rainfall means you’ll probably catch a shower or two during your trip – not the constant grey drizzle of February, more like a sudden afternoon downpour that passes in an hour. Cafés exist everywhere. You’ll be fine.
Crowds are real but manageable. This isn’t August, when the Hagia Sophia feels genuinely suffocating and queue times become a part of the itinerary. May brings tourists, yes, but you can still stand inside the Blue Mosque without someone’s elbow in your ribs. Book the Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia entry in advance anyway – thirty seconds online, saves real frustration.
Everything is open and fully operational. Rooftop bars, Bosphorus ferry tours, the Grand Bazaar without its winter reduced hours. The tulip festival technically peaks in April, but you’ll still catch some colour lingering in the parks if you’re lucky.
Who is this trip actually for? Honestly, almost anyone. Families can handle the heat and crowds better than summer. Couples get the atmosphere without the chaos. Solo travellers, photographers – the light in May is genuinely lovely, warm without the harsh glare of July.
Who should maybe reconsider? Anyone wanting rock-bottom prices. Shoulder season here isn’t budget season – accommodation costs reflect the demand.
**One practical tip:** take the ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy on the Asian side. It costs almost nothing, takes twenty minutes, and gives you a Bosphorus crossing that tour boats charge twenty times more for. Eat lunch over there and take the ferry back. One of the best afternoons Istanbul offers.
