October might honestly be the best time to visit Istanbul, and I’ll tell you why without pretending it’s perfect.

The summer crowds have thinned considerably by October, which matters enormously in a city where the Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar can feel genuinely suffocating in July. You’ll still encounter tourists – Istanbul never really empties – but you can actually stand in front of something beautiful without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. Locals reclaim their city a little, and that changes the atmosphere in ways that are hard to quantify but easy to feel.

The temperature sits around 19°C, which is genuinely comfortable walking weather. You’re not melting through the steep streets of Beyoğlu or sweating through a ferry crossing on the Bosphorus. Bring a light jacket because evenings cool down properly, and that’s actually lovely for sitting outside at a meyhane with rakı and meze.

Now, the rain. Nearly 93mm across the month is real and worth respecting. October can produce some grey, drizzly stretches rather than neat daily showers. **One practical tip:** Take a Bosphorus ferry on an overcast morning rather than waiting for sunshine that might not come. Fog on the strait, with the minarets emerging through mist, is one of those accidental Istanbul moments that sticks with you longer than anything you planned.
