# Kefalonia in April: Honest Thoughts
April is genuinely one of my favourite times to visit Kefalonia, but it comes with trade-offs worth knowing before you book.
The weather sits around 19°C, which sounds lovely on paper and largely is, but don’t expect beach holiday conditions. You’ll get genuinely warm, sunny stretches where a t-shirt feels fine by afternoon, followed by days that turn grey and cool with real rain. That 30mm monthly rainfall isn’t spread evenly – it tends to arrive in concentrated bursts, sometimes lasting a full day. Pack a decent jacket and accept that one or two days might be legitimately write-offs weather-wise.
What April gets spectacularly right is everything else. The island is dramatically green, covered in wildflowers, and the light has this clarity that summer’s haze completely kills. Myrtos Beach looks genuinely unreal – that turquoise against the limestone cliffs without a single sun lounger or body in sight. You can actually stand there and take it in rather than negotiating for space.
Crowds are minimal to non-existent. Most package tourism hasn’t arrived yet, so you’re dealing with independent travellers, hikers, and people specifically choosing the shoulder season. Restaurants in Argostoli and Fiskardo are open but relaxed, happy to talk, not rushed. Some smaller tavernas and beach bars are still shuttered or opening intermittently, so don’t plan your trip around a specific spot without checking ahead.
Fiskardo, the pretty northern village, is quieter than it gets in summer but still has enough open to enjoy it properly. Assos is worth visiting just for the drive alone.
Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you’re not fundamentally a beach person or you’re happy treating swimming as a bonus rather than the point. Walkers, photographers, anyone who finds summer crowds exhausting – April is your month here.
**Practical tip:** Hire a car immediately. April bus services are limited and several of the best spots – Antisamos, Sami, the mountain villages – are effectively inaccessible without your own transport. Don’t leave it to chance once you arrive.
