Look, November in Kefalonia is not the Instagram version of Greece. The temperature sits around 13-14°C, which feels noticeably colder than that once the wind comes off the water, and you’ll get roughly 60mm of rain across the month – meaning genuine rainy days, not just a romantic afternoon shower. Pack a proper jacket. Pack waterproofs. Don’t pack the linen trousers you wore in August.
That said, there’s something genuinely compelling about the island at this time of year, if you’re the right kind of traveller.
The crowds are essentially gone. Myrtos Beach, which in summer resembles a car park with a sea view, is dramatically, cinematically empty. You can stand on one of the most photographed coastlines in Greece with nobody around you, waves doing their thing, and it feels like a completely different place. Fiskardo, the pretty harbour village that gets absolutely swamped in peak season, becomes quietly charming again – you can actually sit in a taverna without competing for a table.
The catch is that a lot of things close. Not everything, but enough. Several restaurants, boat trips, and smaller businesses shut up shop by late October and don’t reopen until Easter or thereabouts. Argostoli, the capital, remains open and functional year-round with proper supermarkets, local spots, and everyday island life happening. It’s the most honest version of the place.
What is genuinely worth doing: hiking is excellent (cool temperatures, green landscapes starting to return after summer’s bleaching), the Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake are open most of the year, and driving the coastal roads with low cloud sitting on the mountains is quietly spectacular.
November suits walkers, photographers, people who find summer resorts exhausting, and anyone who genuinely wants to read a book without guilt.
**Practical tip:** Don’t assume the hire car place you booked online is actually open when you arrive. Call ahead specifically to confirm your collection time. Several operate reduced or irregular hours in November, and sorting that out at the airport is not a fun start.
