# Koper in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is quietly one of the better times to show up in Koper, and most people completely overlook it in favour of the summer crush. That’s honestly their loss.
The weather sits around 18°C, which sounds underwhelming on paper but feels genuinely lovely in practice. You’re walking around Titov trg in a light jacket, eating lunch outside without sweating through your shirt, and actually looking at the Praetorian Palace rather than shuffling past it in a tourist queue. The 20mm of rainfall across the month means you’ll probably catch a shower or two, but nothing that derails a day. It’s the kind of rain that sends you into a cafe for an hour, which in a Slovenian coastal town is hardly a punishment.
Crowds are light without being nonexistent. The Italians come down on weekends, particularly from Trieste, so Saturday afternoons have some buzz around the old town and the market. Weekday mornings though? The loggia, the cathedral, the narrow streets behind the main square — you have them almost entirely to yourself. This is a real working town, not a preserved-in-amber resort, and in May that working town quality comes through clearly.
Everything is open. Restaurants, the market, boat trips across to Piran — all running normally. The Koper City Gallery typically has spring exhibitions on. The seafront is pleasant for walking without being overrun by people on rental scooters and sunbeds.
Is it worth visiting? If you’re someone who genuinely wants to understand a place rather than just photograph it, absolutely yes. If you need beach weather and nightlife, you’re two months too early.
It suits couples, anyone doing the Istrian coastal circuit, slow travellers who want a base for day-tripping into the Slovenian hinterland, and honestly anyone tired of peak-season tourism theatre.
**One practical tip:** Park outside the old town walls and walk in. The parking situation inside is chaotic and the old town is small enough that you don’t need a car once you’re there.
