# Korčula in May: Before the Crowds Eat It Alive

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Korčula, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent most of that trip resenting other tourists while sweating through my shirt.

**What it actually feels like**

Twenty degrees is real walking-around weather. You’re comfortable in a t-shirt by midday, might want a light jacket for evenings when the sea breeze comes in. The 20mm of rain sounds alarming but it’s not – you’re realistically looking at a few showers across the whole month, not prolonged grey misery. Afternoons are mostly sunny. The Adriatic is still cold for swimming, hovering around 18°C, so don’t plan a beach holiday. But wandering the old town, cycling the island, taking the ferry to Badija – all of that feels genuinely pleasant rather than punishing.

**The crowd situation**

Early May is quiet. Noticeably, refreshingly quiet. Restaurants have space, you can photograph the old town without strangers walking into every shot, and locals are still in the mood to have actual conversations with visitors. Late May starts filling up, especially weekends, as Croatian domestic tourism kicks off alongside early European arrivals. It’s not August-levels of chaos, but you’ll feel the difference.

**What’s open**

Most restaurants, bars, and boat tours are running by mid-May. Some smaller places are still finding their feet in early May – a few might open Thursday through Sunday only. The Moreška sword dance performances start up properly in May, which is worth catching if you’re there.

**Is it worth it?**

For couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes exploring at their own pace without being herded – yes, absolutely. Families with kids who need guaranteed beach time and warm water should probably wait until July.

**One practical tip**

Book your ferry from Split or Orebić in advance for weekend travel. May feels off-season until suddenly it doesn’t, and you don’t want to spend three hours waiting on a dock.
