# Lagos in April: What It’s Actually Like

April sits in that awkward shoulder season where Lagos hasn’t quite decided what it wants to be yet. The Algarve’s tourist machine is warming up but hasn’t hit full throttle, which is honestly the most interesting time to see this town.

**The weather is fine, not spectacular.** That 19.8°C average sounds pleasant on paper, and it mostly is – you can eat outside comfortably and walk the cliffs without melting. But “average” hides the reality that evenings get genuinely cool, maybe 13-14°C, and that 30mm of rain has to land somewhere. You’ll likely get a few overcast days, possibly a proper rainy afternoon where you’re stuck in a café watching the Atlantic look dramatic and grey. Honestly? Some people love that. The ocean is still too cold for most swimmers, so don’t book expecting beach days unless you’re a hardened open-water type.

**Crowds are manageable but building.** Easter week is the wildcard – if your trip overlaps with it, prices jump and the better restaurants fill up. Outside Easter, you’ll find Lagos pleasantly occupied rather than heaving. You can actually get a table at Cantinho do Mar without planning your entire day around it.

**What’s open:** Most things, which wasn’t true in February. The boat trips to the famous Ponta da Piedade sea caves are running regularly, and that’s genuinely worth prioritising – those ochre rock formations are the reason people fly here. Restaurants are mostly open, though some smaller places keep reduced hours until May.

**Who should go in April:** Couples, hikers, anyone who hates crowds, photographers, people on a budget. Families wanting guaranteed beach fun might want to wait until June. Surfers are fine year-round.

**One practical tip:** Bring a proper layer for evenings and a light waterproof. Not because it’s miserable, but because being unprepared for a cool evening will genuinely ruin your mood when everyone else is sitting outside comfortably and you’re quietly freezing into your wine.

Worth it? For the right person, April in Lagos beats August completely.
