Visiting Losinj in September

# Losinj in September: What It’s Actually Like

Here’s the honest truth about September on Losinj: it’s a bit of a gamble, but often a really good one.

The summer madness is winding down, particularly after the first week or two. The Italians and Austrians who pack out Mali Losinj in July and August have largely headed home, which means you can actually walk along the Riva without feeling like you’re in a slow-moving queue. Restaurants have tables available. You can get a sunbed without staging a 7am towel ambush. This alone makes a strong argument for September.

Weather-wise, you’re rolling the dice a little. Early September usually carries the warmth of summer forward – you can reasonably expect temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties and sea warm enough to swim in comfortably. Later in the month it gets murkier. Rain becomes more realistic, not constant but possible, and you might get a week of gorgeous golden light or a few grey days that make the pine forests smell incredible but don’t exactly scream beach holiday. Pack a light layer and don’t build your entire trip around guaranteed sunshine.

Most things are still open in September, which isn’t guaranteed everywhere in Croatia. The restaurants, boat trips, the Apothecary Museum, the dolphin research centre visits – they’re running. By late September some seasonal beach bars start pulling down the shutters, but the island doesn’t go into hibernation until October.

Worth it? If you like swimming and want real crowds, push for early September. If you’re more interested in walking the pine-scented paths, eating well, kayaking around the coastline, or just sitting somewhere quietly beautiful without someone’s inflatable flamingo in your peripheral vision, September is genuinely excellent. It suits couples and people who find peak-season resorts exhausting.

**Practical tip:** Book your accommodation before you go, even in September. The island is small and the good places still fill up. Don’t assume quieter season means you can show up and figure it out.
