Marseille in November is not the Marseille of Instagram. The calanques aren’t shimmering under perfect blue skies, and the Vieux-Port isn’t buzzing with tourists sipping rosé. What you actually get is a city that feels genuinely itself, which is either exactly what you want or a reason to book somewhere else entirely.

The weather sits around 15 degrees, which sounds reasonable until the mistral shows up. That wind will cut through you on the harbour with an almost personal aggression. Pack layers you can actually close properly, and expect some days to feel much colder than the thermometer suggests. The 120mm of rain across the month means proper wet days are coming – not constant drizzle, but actual downpours that clear fast. You’ll have sunny stretches too, sometimes gloriously bright ones, just don’t plan around them.

Crowds are genuinely minimal. MuCEM, the extraordinary museum sitting over the sea, is yours to wander without shuffling behind tour groups. Restaurants in Le Panier and around the port are operating for locals, not for turnover, and you’ll actually get a table at places that matter. The fish market at the Vieux-Port still runs most mornings and feels completely real in a way it doesn’t in summer.

The calanques are hikeable and honestly beautiful in the low light, but check trail conditions – heavy rain can close paths quickly and some boats stop running. A few smaller attractions operate reduced hours, so a quick check before showing up somewhere specific saves frustration.

Is it worth it? For city explorers, food people, and anyone who finds tourist-heavy destinations exhausting, absolutely yes. For beach holidaymakers or anyone whose enjoyment depends on reliable sunshine, genuinely no – come back in May.

**Practical tip:** Marseille has a justified reputation for petty theft and it gets worse when you’re distracted wrestling with an umbrella in a downpour. Keep bags closed and worn across your body, particularly around the Canebière and on the metro. Nothing dramatic, just sensible.
