# Matera in February: Honest Notes
Let’s be real about February in Matera. It’s cold, it’s occasionally grey, and the wind that funnels through those ancient ravines has absolutely no manners. You’re looking at around 10 degrees on a decent day, and 50mm of rain across the month means you’ll almost certainly get caught in something unpleasant at least once. Pack accordingly and accept this upfront rather than hoping for the best.
That said, there’s something genuinely special about Matera in winter that the Instagram version of this city completely misses.
The sassi — those extraordinary cave dwellings carved into the hillside — feel completely different when you’re essentially alone in them. February is about as quiet as this city gets. The 2019 Capital of Culture hangover brought serious tourist infrastructure, and peak season now gets genuinely crowded. In February you can stand on a viewpoint over the ravine and hear actual silence, which in a place this old feels appropriate. The cave churches, the narrow stepped alleys, the weird suspended feeling of walking through something that has been continuously inhabited for 9,000 years — you actually get to sit with all of that rather than navigate around selfie sticks.
Most restaurants stay open, though some reduce their hours. The main museums and cave church complexes operate normally. You won’t find everything running, but you won’t feel abandoned either. This isn’t a town that fully hibernates.
Is it worth visiting in February? For photographers, solo travellers who find crowds exhausting, and anyone genuinely interested in the history rather than the backdrop — yes, honestly yes. For families with young children expecting sunshine and outdoor dining, probably wait until April.
The practical tip nobody tells you: wear shoes with serious grip. Those polished stone steps throughout the sassi become genuinely treacherous when wet, and they will be wet. Several visitors discover this the hard way every single season. Good waterproof footwear isn’t a suggestion here, it’s the difference between a memorable trip and a memorable injury.
Go knowing what it is. It rewards that honesty.
