# Matera in October: What It’s Actually Like

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Matera, though “better” comes with some honest caveats worth knowing before you book.

The temperature sits around 18°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is. Evenings drop noticeably though, so that linen shirt you packed will feel optimistic by 7pm. Bring a proper layer. Days are pleasant for walking the Sassi without sweating through your clothes, which is a real upgrade on July and August when the ancient stone basically becomes a pizza oven and tourists clog every viewpoint three people deep.

Speaking of crowds, October sees a significant drop-off, particularly after the first week once Italian school holidays end. You’ll still encounter tour groups, especially on weekends, but the Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano feel exploreable rather than survivable. You can actually stop and look at things without someone reversing into you with a rolling suitcase.

The 45mm of rainfall is real and worth respecting. You’re not looking at constant grey drizzle, more like several days with genuine rain, often arriving as afternoon showers. The Sassi’s stone paths become slippery when wet, which matters because there are a lot of uneven steps and slopes. The upside is that Matera in low cloud and soft light looks genuinely cinematic, particularly around the ravine. Your photos may actually be better.

Most things are open. Restaurants, the cave churches, the MUSMA contemporary art museum carved into a palazzo, guided cave house tours. Some smaller artisan shops keep reduced hours mid-week. The cave church frescoes at Santa Maria de Idris are worth prioritising regardless of weather since they’re underground anyway.

Is it worth it? For anyone who likes their travel at human pace, yes, clearly. For families with young children who need guaranteed sunshine and beach backup, maybe consider the shoulder of September instead.

**Practical tip:** Book your cave hotel for at least two nights. One night in Matera feels rushed and vaguely melancholy. Two nights lets the place actually settle into you.
