# Milos in October: The Honest Version
Here’s the thing about Milos in October – it’s genuinely lovely, but you need to know what you’re signing up for.
The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds perfect on paper. And mostly it is. You can still swim comfortably, especially in the first half of the month when the sea holds onto that summer warmth. The light is extraordinary – that low golden October light bouncing off the white and terracotta cliffs at Sarakiniko feels almost theatrical. You’ll want to photograph everything.
That 45mm of rainfall does show up, though. Not constantly, not even daily, but you’ll almost certainly get a grey day or two, possibly a proper storm rolling in off the sea. The boats to the sea caves get cancelled when winds pick up, and some of the most spectacular coastline on the island is only accessible by water. That’s genuinely frustrating if you’ve been planning your trip around Kleftiko. Factor in flexibility rather than a rigid itinerary.
Crowds are dramatically reduced compared to August’s absolute chaos. You can actually park, walk around Plaka without shuffling, and get a table at a taverna without a reservation. This alone makes October genuinely appealing. The island breathes again.
What’s open is the real question. Some accommodation closes mid-October. Certain restaurants and beach bars shut up entirely. You won’t have the full summer menu of options, but the places that stay open are usually the ones locals actually use, which tends to mean better food anyway. The fishing boats are still going out. You can eat very well.
Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, photographers, anyone who finds August crowds actively miserable – yes, absolutely. Families with young children who need reliable beach days and full tourist infrastructure might find the uncertainty frustrating.
**One practical tip:** Book a rental car before you arrive. October availability sounds fine until it isn’t, and without wheels you’ll see about a third of what this island actually offers.
