Visiting Montpellier in December
# Montpellier in December
Look, December in Montpellier is genuinely one of those months where you could get lucky or you could spend a week in a grey drizzle wondering why you didn’t just go to Lisbon. The Mediterranean climate means it’s milder than Paris — you’re looking at daytime temperatures around 10-12°C — but “mild” is doing some heavy lifting there. It’s not warm. Evenings are properly cold, the tramontane wind comes ripping through without apology, and rainfall is actually quite variable. Some Decembers are crisp and sunny. Others are relentlessly damp. You won’t know which you’re getting until you’re already there.
What you will find is a city that actually functions like a city, which is more than you can say for a lot of southern French destinations in winter. Montpellier isn’t a seasonal tourist town — it’s a proper, dense, student-heavy place with around 70,000 university students who don’t disappear in the off-season. Bars, restaurants, the covered market at Les Halles Laissac, the tram network — all of it keeps running. The Fabre Museum is open and genuinely excellent if you care about French painting. The historic Écusson neighborhood is pleasant to wander without fighting through summer crowds.
The Christmas market runs through December on the Place de la Comédie and around the centre, and while it’s not Strasbourg, it’s perfectly decent — vin chaud, local producers, lights across the main square. The vibe is local rather than touristy, which is actually its charm.
Crowds are low. Hotel prices drop noticeably. You can walk into restaurants without booking two weeks ahead. If you’re someone who finds summer southern France overwhelming and overpriced, December makes a compelling counterargument.
That said, if you’re coming for beach weather or outdoor café culture, December will disappoint you. Save that trip for May.
**Practical tip:** Pack layers and a proper waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast. The wind chill makes 11°C feel significantly colder, and the Écusson’s stone streets offer very little shelter.
