# Nafplio in December: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be honest with you: Nafplio in December is grey, sometimes drizzly, and occasionally genuinely cold. That 9.8°C average sounds manageable until the wind comes off the Argolic Gulf and cuts straight through whatever jacket you thought was sufficient. Pack something warmer than you think you need.
The 65mm of rain across the month means you’ll almost certainly catch at least one properly wet day, possibly two or three. It rarely hammers down for hours on end, but that persistent damp drizzle is very much on the table. The old town’s narrow streets, charming as they are, become slippery cobblestones in the wet. Worth knowing before you pack your nice leather-soled boots.
Here’s the thing though: the town is genuinely lovely in December. The crowds essentially evaporate. You can walk through Syntagma Square without negotiating tour groups, climb up to Palamidi fortress and have the views almost entirely to yourself, and sit in a taverna without feeling rushed. The locals are actually in their own town again, which changes the atmosphere completely. Conversations happen more naturally. Prices are lower. You’ll find parking if you’re driving.
Most things remain open, though hours get unpredictable. The Archaeological Museum operates reduced hours, some waterfront restaurants close entirely or open only weekends, and you’ll want to check ahead rather than assume. The fortress stays open, and honestly on a clear December day the views over the bay are stunning in that low winter light.
Is it worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you hate heat and crowds, want to actually explore rather than exist among tourists, and enjoy having a historic town feel like it belongs to the people who live there, December delivers something the summer genuinely cannot. Romantic weekend? Excellent choice. Family trip with young kids expecting beach weather? Probably not the timing.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with heating that actually works and confirm this before arriving. Not every guesthouse in an old building runs their heating adequately in what locals consider “mild” winter temperatures.
