# Nafplio in October: Worth It, With a Few Caveats

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Nafplio, but let me be straight with you rather than just cheerleading.

The weather sits around 19-20°C, which sounds perfect on paper. And mostly it is — comfortable for walking up to Palamidi Fortress without arriving at the top looking like you’ve swum there. You’ll want a light jacket for evenings, which cool down noticeably. The 45mm of rainfall means you’ll probably catch at least one grey, drizzly day during a week’s stay. Not a disaster, but worth packing layers rather than assuming pure sunshine.

The old town is genuinely lovely in October. The crowds that pack Syntagma Square and the waterfront promenade through summer have thinned considerably, and you can actually linger over a coffee without feeling like you’re competing for oxygen. Greek domestic tourism keeps things reasonably lively on weekends — Nafplio is a popular Athenian weekend escape — so Friday and Saturday nights still have energy. Weekday mornings feel almost like having the place to yourself.

Everything important stays open. Palamidi, Bourtzi castle on its little island, the Archaeological Museum — all operating normally. Some smaller waterfront restaurants start reducing hours or closing Mondays and Tuesdays, but you won’t struggle to eat well.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, particularly if you’re pairing it with Mycenae or Epidaurus. The archaeological sites around the Argolid are genuinely more enjoyable without summer heat hammering down on exposed ruins. Families, older travellers, and anyone who wilts in 35-degree heat will appreciate October significantly more than they’d appreciate July.

If you’re specifically chasing beach time, the sea is still swimmable — water temperatures hold around 22-23°C — but the beach scene is winding down rather than buzzing.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation for weekends in advance. Nafplio fills up with Athenians on autumn weekends more than visitors expect, and the town is small enough that decent places genuinely sell out, even in October.
