Visiting Nice in December

Weather in December: Average high 12.9°C, 82.9mm rainfall.

# Nice in December: Pretty Quiet, Pretty Wet

Let me be straight with you: December in Nice is not the glamorous Riviera fantasy. It’s mild by northern European standards, sure, but 13°C with a decent amount of rainfall means you’ll spend more time sheltering in cafés than lounging on the Promenade des Anglais. That said, it’s far from a write-off, and for certain types of traveller it’s genuinely one of the better times to visit.

The weather is the main thing to calibrate your expectations around. Nearly 83mm of rain across the month sounds manageable until you realise it often arrives in Mediterranean-style bursts — heavy, dramatic, then gone. You’ll have gorgeous crisp sunny days where the light on the old town is absolutely stunning, then a full day where the sky just opens. Pack accordingly and don’t build an itinerary that collapses if it rains.

Crowds are minimal. The summer hordes are long gone, and you’ll actually be able to walk through the Cours Saleya market without being elbowed into a lavender display. Restaurants have tables available. Hotel prices drop noticeably. The city feels like it belongs to the people who actually live there, which is honestly more interesting.

Most things you’d want to do are open. The Matisse Museum, the Chagall Museum, the old town itself — all fine. The Christmas market runs through much of December and is genuinely charming rather than the corporate nightmare you’ll find in bigger cities. Eating and drinking, obviously, carries on regardless.

So who should come? Couples who want a relaxed long weekend without the price tag, museum people, food-focused travellers, anyone who finds packed summer resorts a bit exhausting. If you’re dreaming of beach days and outdoor dining until midnight, wait until June.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town rather than along the seafront. In summer the Promenade location makes sense. In December, being tucked into the Vieux-Nice means you’re steps from everything good and can duck out of the rain without thinking twice.
