# Nice in January: Honest Thoughts
Let me be straight with you: Nice in January is not the Nice of postcards. The Promenade des Anglais is mostly empty, the sky spends a fair amount of time being grey, and you’ll average around 11 or 12 degrees with a decent chance of rain. Nearly 75mm falls across the month, which isn’t torrential but it’s enough to interrupt your plans regularly and make that waterfront walk feel more bracing than romantic.
That said, there’s something genuinely appealing about it if you’re the right kind of traveller.
The crowds are basically gone. You can walk through the old town, Vieux-Nice, and actually stop to look at things without shuffling along in a human traffic jam. The market on Cours Saleya feels like a real local market rather than a performance. Restaurants have tables available. Hotels are significantly cheaper. The city breathes differently in January, and if you’ve only seen it in summer, it almost feels like a different place — quieter, a bit worn, oddly charming.
Most things are open. Nice isn’t a heavily seasonal city the way somewhere smaller might be. The Matisse Museum, the Chagall Museum, the castle hill — all functioning normally. The food scene doesn’t hibernate. You’ll eat well, possibly better than in summer when everywhere is rushed and slightly overrun.
What you won’t get is beach weather. Obviously. Anyone sitting on the pebbles in January is either very committed or slightly confused. The sea is cold and the beach is more or less abandoned.
Is it worth going? For museum-focused travellers, couples wanting a relaxed city break, or anyone who gets anxious in crowds — yes, genuinely yes. For people who need sunshine and warmth to enjoy themselves, honestly wait until April at minimum.
**Practical tip:** Pack a proper waterproof jacket, not just a light layer. When it rains in Nice in January, the wind off the sea makes it feel rawer than the temperature suggests, and you’ll want something that actually keeps you dry rather than optimistically damp.
