Visiting Paxos in August

# Paxos in August: Beautiful, But Brace Yourself

Let me be straight with you. August in Paxos is essentially high summer Mediterranean, which means hot. We’re talking reliably 30°C plus, strong sunshine, barely a cloud threatening to ruin your tan. Rainfall is almost nonexistent – you can pack your waterproof at the very bottom of the bag and probably never touch it. The sea is warm, flat, and that absurd blue-green colour that makes you feel like your eyes are broken.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you book: Paxos is tiny. Genuinely tiny. The whole island is about 10 kilometres long, and in August it feels like half of Europe has decided to squeeze onto it simultaneously. The harbour at Gaios fills up with superyachts and day-tripper boats from Corfu creating this floating traffic jam that looks impressive but makes actually swimming near town a bit grim. Lakka and Loggos are quieter and honestly more enjoyable bases, but don’t expect solitude anywhere.

Everything is open in August – every taverna, every boat hire place, every little shop selling olive oil and ceramics. You won’t struggle to find food or activities. You’ll struggle to find a table without a reservation, a sun lounger without arriving embarrassingly early, or a moment of genuine peace at the popular spots like the sea caves near Antipaxos.

Is it worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want a lively, sociable Greek island holiday with guaranteed sunshine, buzzy evenings, and that gorgeous water, August delivers. If you’re hoping for an authentic slow-paced escape, you might leave feeling vaguely cheated and definitely lighter in the wallet.

**Practical tip:** Book a boat for a day early in your trip, leave before 9am, and head straight to Antipaxos. The beaches there – Voutoumi especially – are genuinely spectacular, but by midday the day boats arrive and the magic evaporates. Early bird gets the turquoise water to themselves.

Go for the beauty, manage your expectations about the crowds, and you’ll have a brilliant time.
