Visiting Pompeii in February
Visiting Pompeii in February
# Pompeii in February: The Honest Version
February is genuinely one of the better times to visit Pompeii, and I say that as someone who has also visited in August and spent most of that trip dodging selfie sticks and quietly losing the will to live.
The crowds are dramatically reduced. You can actually stand in front of the Villa of the Mysteries or walk down a side street and feel something approaching the eerie stillness the place deserves. That atmosphere — the one everyone imagines when they think of Pompeii — is actually accessible in winter. In summer it largely isn’t.
**What to expect with weather:** February in southern Italy means uncertainty. You might get cool, bright days around 12-14°C that are perfectly pleasant for walking several kilometres of uneven ancient streets. You might also get driving rain that turns those same streets into shallow rivers. Rainfall is reasonably likely, and the site offers almost no shelter. This isn’t a reason to avoid February — it’s a reason to bring proper waterproof layers and accept that you’re rolling the dice slightly.
**What’s open:** Some houses and excavated areas operate on rotation regardless of season, meaning certain spaces will be closed whenever you visit. February occasionally brings additional closures for conservation or staffing reasons. Check the official Pompeii site before you go rather than assuming the thing you specifically want to see is accessible. A few people have arrived specifically for the Garden of the Fugitives and found it shut. Don’t be those people.
**Is it worth it in February?** For most adults travelling independently who care about actually absorbing a historical site rather than ticking it off, yes, absolutely. For families with young children who need sunshine and ice cream to stay cooperative, maybe hold out for March or April when conditions are more forgiving without yet being crowded.
**One practical tip:** Wear proper walking shoes with grip. The original Roman paving stones are beautiful and authentically uneven, and they become genuinely treacherous when wet. Trainers are not enough.
Go in February. Just pack for the weather that might arrive, not the one you’re hoping for.
