# Portimão in October: The Honest Version

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Portimão, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent most of it resenting other tourists.

**What it actually feels like**

Nearly 20 degrees sounds modest on paper but in practice it’s warm enough to sit outside for lunch in a t-shirt, walk the beaches comfortably, and not feel cheated out of a holiday. The sea is still holding onto summer heat, typically around 20-21°C, which means swimming is absolutely still on the table. You’ll have the odd overcast day and a few proper rainy spells – that 45mm has to land somewhere – but October rain here tends to arrive in short, dramatic bursts rather than grey week-long drizzle. You might lose a morning. You won’t lose the week.

**Crowds and atmosphere**

The shift is noticeable and mostly welcome. Praia da Rocha, which in August feels like a logistical challenge, becomes actually enjoyable. You can park. You can get a table without a reservation. Local restaurants that spend summer on autopilot start caring about their food again. The town itself feels more like somewhere real people live.

**What’s open**

Most things. This isn’t shoulder season in the dead-quiet sense. Restaurants, boat trips, the marina area, the municipal market – all operating normally. A handful of beach bars will have closed or reduced hours, but nothing that significantly limits what you can do.

**Is it worth it?**

For couples, solo travellers, anyone over the age of about twelve, or people who find peak-season Algarve a bit exhausting – yes, strongly. If you’re travelling with kids who specifically need a packed beach scene and fairground energy, you might find it slightly flat.

**One practical tip**

Book a river and cave boat trip for early in your stay rather than saving it. October weather is generally fine but trip cancellations due to wind or swell do happen, and you want a backup day if needed.
