# Portimão in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
September in Portimão is genuinely one of the better times to visit, and I say that as someone who’s been there in the peak August madness and knows the difference.
The weather sits around 25°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there and realise it’s warm enough to swim comfortably, eat outside every evening, and spend full days on Praia da Rocha without feeling like you’re being slow-roasted. The 20mm of monthly rainfall usually means a handful of brief showers rather than grey, washed-out days. You might get caught in one, but it’ll probably pass before you’ve finished your second coffee.
The crowds are meaningfully thinner than July and August, though “thin” is relative. The first two weeks of September still feel fairly busy, particularly on weekends when Spanish and Portuguese visitors come down. By the third week, things genuinely ease off. You’ll get a table at a restaurant without a reservation, find parking without a minor breakdown, and actually move around Praia da Rocha without constant human obstacle courses.
Everything is open. That’s worth saying clearly, because it’s not like October when things start shutting. Boat trips, river cruises up to Silves, the fish market, restaurants along the marina – all running normally. The fish market especially is worth your time; it’s been renovated and it’s the real thing, not a tourist performance.
**Is it worth visiting in September?** For couples, older travellers, or anyone who finds peak summer genuinely exhausting, yes, absolutely. For families with school-age kids it gets trickier after mid-September obviously, but the first two weeks work fine. If you need guaranteed non-stop sunshine and a buzzing beach scene every single day, you might prefer August, but you’ll pay for that in every possible way.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation for the first two weeks of September as if it’s still peak season, because prices haven’t dropped much yet. Wait until late September and you’ll notice the difference.
