# Portofino in March: Pretty, Quiet, and Occasionally Soggy
Let me be straight with you: March Portofino is not the Instagram version. The light is softer, the harbour is quieter, and there’s a decent chance you’ll be pulling your jacket tighter than you expected.
At 12.4°C, it’s genuinely cool rather than cold, but the sea breeze coming off the Ligurian coast has teeth. You’re not sitting outside nursing an Aperol Spritz in a linen shirt. You’re probably in a proper jacket, maybe a scarf, watching the fishing boats while the few other tourists around look equally underdressed and mildly surprised.
The rain — around 45mm across the month — tends to arrive in bursts rather than grey drizzle. You’ll get beautiful crisp mornings, then a sharp shower rolls in, then it clears again. Annoying if you’re hiking the coastal paths to San Fruttuoso, genuinely fine if you’re flexible about your timing.
Here’s what’s actually good about this: the village is almost entirely yours. The day-tripper coaches from Portofino Vetta don’t run in the same numbers. The tiny harbour piazzetta has room to breathe. You can actually photograph that famous row of pastel buildings without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. Locals are unhurried and noticeably warmer in demeanour than during peak season.
What’s open is the honest question. Most boutiques and several restaurants close or run reduced hours — this is a resort village, and resort villages go a bit dormant before Easter. You won’t starve, but choices are genuinely limited. Two or three restaurants will be operating, which is fine.
**Is it worth going?** If you value atmosphere over sunshine and don’t need a packed itinerary, absolutely yes. It suits independent travellers, couples wanting somewhere quiet, photographers, and anyone who finds August crowds exhausting. It’s not right for families expecting facilities and buzz.
**One practical tip:** Check the ferry schedule from Santa Margherita Ligure before you commit to anything. Reduced winter timetables mean missing one boat can swallow an hour of your afternoon.
