# Portorož in December: The Honest Truth

Look, Portorož in December is a completely different animal from the summer version, and whether that’s a good or bad thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely grey and a bit miserable. Seven or eight degrees means you’re in a proper jacket, possibly two layers, and those 65mm of rainfall don’t announce themselves politely — they tend to show up as persistent drizzle that hangs around for days rather than one dramatic downpour that clears quickly. The Adriatic looks more brooding than turquoise. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The crowds, though? Basically gone. The promenade that gets absolutely heaved with tourists in July becomes almost eerily quiet. You can walk the full length without navigating a single selfie stick. The casino stays open and draws some visitors, and the salt pans area still has its own stark, flat beauty in winter light — actually quite atmospheric if you’re into that sort of thing.

Most of the beach bars and seasonal restaurants will be shuttered, which matters. You’re not coming here for a full food scene in December. That said, the town isn’t completely dead — there are year-round restaurants, a handful of hotels remain open (often with genuinely good off-season rates), and the spa facilities at the bigger hotels keep running. The wellness crowd specifically finds December quite appealing for exactly this reason: thermal pools, treatments, low prices, no queue for the sauna.

Is it worth visiting? For families with young kids or anyone expecting a beach holiday, honestly no — save it for June. But if you want somewhere quiet on the Slovenian coast to decompress, read books, do spa days, and eat dinner without a reservation, it actually works quite well. It has a melancholy charm that summer completely buries.

**Practical tip:** Book a hotel with an indoor pool included in the rate. Don’t rely on finding entertainment outside — some days you’ll simply want to be warm, and having that option built in makes the grey days genuinely pleasant rather than frustrating.
