# Portorož in March: Honest Take
Look, March in Portorož is not the glossy brochure version. The Adriatic is steel-grey, the temperature hovers around 12 degrees, and you’ll get a fair bit of rain – around 45mm across the month, which isn’t torrential but means you should absolutely pack something waterproof. Some days are genuinely lovely with that crisp Slovenian coastal light. Others are just damp and grey and you’ll be eating soup and wondering why you didn’t go somewhere warmer.
**What it actually feels like**
The town is quiet. Properly quiet. The big hotels are starting to dust themselves off but the beach scene is completely dead – nobody’s swimming, the sunbeds are stacked away, and the promenade has more dog walkers than tourists. The casino stays open year-round so there’s always *something* happening, but the overall vibe is a small off-season resort town rather than a destination buzzing with life.
**What’s open**
Most restaurants and cafes in town are operating, though some of the more seasonal spots haven’t woken up yet. The wellness hotels – and this is where Portorož genuinely earns its reputation – are fully open and often running shoulder-season deals. Spa days are significantly cheaper than summer. Piran, just a couple of kilometres along the coast, is fully functioning and honestly more atmospheric in the quiet months than when it’s packed with August crowds.
**Is it worth it?**
For specific types of people, genuinely yes. If you want a spa break without paying peak prices or fighting for a sun lounger, this is your month. If you’re using it as a base to explore the Karst region, Lipica, or even Trieste just across the border, the lack of crowds works in your favour. If you want beach holiday energy, wait until June.
**One practical tip**
Book a hotel with a pool or thermal facilities included in the room rate. On a rainy Tuesday in March, that heated indoor pool goes from a nice bonus to the entire reason you’re happy you came.
