Visiting Positano in April

Visiting Positano in April

Weather in April: Average high 17.1°C, 78.9mm rainfall.

# Positano in April: Pretty, Slightly Damp, Refreshingly Sane

Let’s be honest about April in Positano. It’s not the sun-drenched, Instagram-perfect Amalfi Coast you’ve been daydreaming about. It’s cooler than you expect, occasionally rainy, and some mornings feel more like a moody British autumn than the Italian Riviera. And yet? It might be the best time to actually visit.

**What it actually feels like**

At 17°C, you’re not swimming. You’re wearing a light jacket, drinking morning coffee while watching clouds move across the cliffs, and feeling genuinely smug about your timing. That 79mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it typically comes in sharp bursts rather than week-long misery. You’ll have grey days, yes. You’ll also have crystalline afternoons where the light on those stacked pastel houses looks almost artificial it’s so beautiful.

**The crowd situation**

This is April’s real gift. Easter weekend aside – avoid that specific window if you hate selfie sticks and tour groups – the town is genuinely walkable. You can photograph the main beach without forty strangers photo-bombing you. Restaurant owners actually talk to you. The famous stepped streets don’t feel like a slow-moving queue. The difference compared to July is genuinely staggering.

**What’s open**

Most restaurants, hotels and shops are operating again after the winter shutdown. Boat trips run weather-dependently, not on a guaranteed daily schedule. Some smaller beach clubs aren’t fully set up yet, which is fine because, again, 17°C.

**Who should go**

Photographers, couples who prefer atmosphere over beach days, hikers tackling the Path of the Gods (spectacular in spring greenery), and anyone who finds peak-season Mediterranean tourism genuinely exhausting.

**Who should probably wait**

Families with young children wanting reliable beach time, or anyone whose holiday mood is entirely weather-dependent.

**One practical tip**

Book accommodation that includes breakfast. On grey mornings you’ll want somewhere warm to sit and reassess your plans, and Positano’s cafes are small and fill up quickly with the same idea.

April won’t give you summer. It’ll give you something better: the actual place.
