# Pula in February: Honest Thoughts

Look, February in Pula is not the postcard version. It’s 8 or 9 degrees, there’s a decent amount of rain throughout the month, and the bora wind can cut through you in a way that makes the temperature feel like a lie. You will need a proper coat, not a light jacket you’re hoping will do the job.

That said, there’s something genuinely compelling about the place in winter.

The amphitheatre doesn’t disappear in February. It’s still one of the best-preserved Roman arenas in the world, and when you’re standing inside it with almost nobody else around, that actually hits harder than it would in August when you’re shuffling through with five hundred other people. The old town is walkable and quiet. The streets feel like they belong to residents rather than visitors, which changes the atmosphere completely. Cafes are open, locals are actually in them, and nobody is trying to sell you a boat trip.

What’s closed is worth knowing. A lot of restaurants will be shut or running reduced hours, some hotels don’t bother opening until spring, and the beach bars and tourist-facing shops along the coast are firmly shuttered. You’re not coming for nightlife or a beach scene. You should also know the museum at the amphitheatre is open, the Temple of Augustus is accessible, and walking the city walls and Forum area costs you nothing.

Is it worth going? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want to actually feel a Roman city rather than photograph it through crowds, if you like the idea of cheap accommodation and empty streets, and if you’re not depending on sunshine to have a good time, February works well. It suits slow travellers, history people, and anyone who finds shoulder season tourism genuinely more interesting than peak summer chaos.

Not the right trip if you need warmth, beach access, or a buzzing restaurant scene every night.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation that includes breakfast. Fewer places are competing for your money in February, so you can often negotiate directly and get a better rate than what’s listed online.
