Visiting Samos in May
# Samos in May: Worth It, With a Few Caveats
May is honestly one of the better times to visit Samos, but let me be straight with you about what you’re actually walking into.
The weather is genuinely pleasant without being guaranteed. Temperatures hover around 20-24°C most days, which feels perfect for walking and sightseeing. But May still throws the odd grey day or short rain shower at you, particularly in the first half of the month. The island is mountainous and green for a reason – it catches more moisture than flatter Aegean islands. Pack a light layer and don’t be surprised if one afternoon feels more like April.
The crowds situation is where May really earns its reputation. The island hasn’t flipped into summer mode yet. Beaches like Psili Ammos and Lemonakia are genuinely quiet. You can eat at a taverna without a reservation, have a conversation with the owner, and park your car without circling. Samos in July and August is a completely different, significantly more chaotic animal. If you want the island rather than a version of it, May gets you closer to that.
Most things are open, but not everything is fully running. Some boat trips and excursions are operating but on reduced schedules. A handful of tavernas and accommodation options are still warming up for the season. The archaeological site at the Heraion is absolutely worth visiting and runs normally. The mountain villages – Manolates, Vourliotes – are beautiful and accessible, and you’ll likely have them largely to yourself.
Is it worth it? Yes, particularly if you’re someone who prefers atmosphere over beach weather guarantees, likes hiking, enjoys ancient history, or simply hates sharing the island with half of Germany. It’s not the month for committing to a beach holiday without a backup plan.
**One practical tip:** Rent a car from the moment you arrive. Public transport on Samos is limited and infrequent, and the best places – the northern coast road, the Pythagorion waterfront in the evening – only really reveal themselves when you can move freely and stop wherever you want.
