# Skiathos in May: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness

If you’ve been to Skiathos in August, you’ll know it feels like the entire population of northern Europe has simultaneously decided to squeeze onto one small Greek island. May is the antidote to that.

The weather sits comfortably around 23°C, which is genuinely pleasant rather than the skin-melting intensity of peak summer. You’ll get some rain – maybe two or three showers across the month – but nothing that derails a trip. Pack a light layer for evenings because it drops off after sunset, and you’ll want something on your shoulders when the breeze comes in off the water.

The island in May feels like it’s warming up rather than performing. Skiathos Town is alive but not suffocating. Restaurants are open, bars are functioning, and you can actually get a table at Koukounaries without planning it like a military operation. Some of the more remote beach bars might still be setting up their sunbeds, but the main beaches are accessible and, crucially, you can find a spot on them.

The sea is around 20-21°C, which sounds cold but once you’re in, it’s genuinely swimmable. Not everyone will agree with that assessment.

**Who is May perfect for?** Couples, solo travellers, anyone who finds crowds anxiety-inducing, photographers who want the postcard shots without forty strangers in them, hikers who want to explore the pine forest trails without sweating through their clothes immediately.

**Who might struggle?** Families expecting the full beach club experience everywhere might find some facilities patchy. The nightlife crowd wanting wall-to-wall action every night will find May quieter than they’d like.

**One practical tip:** Rent a scooter or small car in the first day. Seriously. The bus route only covers the main road, and half of what makes Skiathos worth visiting – the smaller coves, the monastery, the inland tracks – is completely inaccessible without wheels. Don’t spend the whole trip on Koukounaries beach when Lalaria exists.

May Skiathos is the island at its most honest. Go before it remembers it’s famous.
