Visiting St Julian’s in May

# St Julian’s in May: What to Actually Expect

May is genuinely one of the more interesting times to visit St Julian’s, and I mean that in a complicated way.

The weather is where things get unpredictable. Malta in May *should* be warm and increasingly sunny, and most years it delivers around 22-25°C with long bright days. But “should” is doing a lot of work there. You can absolutely hit a week of grey skies and surprising rain, especially early in the month. Pack a light layer and don’t build your entire trip around beach days unless you’re flexible about disappointment.

What May gets genuinely right is the crowd situation. The summer hordes haven’t arrived yet. You can actually walk along the Spinola Bay promenade without shuffling behind a wall of people. Restaurant tables are available without advance planning. The bars in Paceville exist rather than *pulsate*. If you went in July or August and swore never again, May would make you reconsider your verdict on the place entirely.

Everything worth visiting is open. The restaurants, the water sports, the boat trips to nearby bays, the casino, the clubs if that’s your thing. St Julian’s infrastructure is pretty much fully operational by May. You’re not arriving to find half the seafront shuttered like you might in February.

The sea temperature is the honest catch. Around 19-20°C, it’s swimmable for some people and a hard no for others. Don’t expect Mediterranean bath water until later in summer.

Who should come in May? Couples who want atmosphere without exhaustion, anyone who prefers eating dinner at a normal pace without being ushered along, and people who actually want to explore the surrounding area – Valletta, Mdina, the Three Cities – without returning to chaos.

Who should wait? Beach-obsessed families with kids who need reliable sun and warm water daily.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. May isn’t peak season but decent places near the bay still fill up, especially around weekends. The value for money compared to August is genuinely significant.
