October is genuinely one of the more interesting times to visit St Julian’s, though not always for the reasons the travel sites will tell you.

The summer crowds have thinned out considerably by October, and that matters more in Paceville and the Spinola Bay area than almost anywhere else in Malta. In August, St Julian’s is essentially a sweaty, neon-lit endurance test. In October, you can actually walk along the promenade without negotiating a human traffic jam, sit at a waterfront restaurant without feeling processed, and appreciate that the place has genuine charm beneath all that seasonal chaos. The limestone buildings catch the light beautifully in autumn, and the bay itself looks properly lovely when you’re not viewing it over a sea of sunburned shoulders.

Weather is genuinely variable and you need to accept that going in. The Mediterranean October can give you warm, golden days in the low 20s that feel like a gifted extension of summer. It can also deliver heavy rain and grey skies, sometimes for several days consecutively. Malta sits in that awkward shoulder-season position where you’re rolling the dice. Pack a light jacket and something waterproof and don’t build your trip around guaranteed beach weather.

Most restaurants, bars, and attractions stay open through October, so you won’t find yourself facing closed shutters the way you might in more seasonally extreme destinations. The casino operates, the restaurants along Balluta Bay are running, and you can still take boat trips on decent weather days.

Who is this month actually good for? People who want a relaxed Mediterranean trip with good food and walkable evenings. Couples who’d rather have atmosphere than a party scene. Anyone who ran out of summer leave and is working with what they’ve got.

It’s probably not ideal if you’re bringing young children counting on beach days, or if unpredictable weather genuinely ruins holidays for you mentally.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation slightly inland rather than directly on the Paceville strip. You get quieter nights, lower prices, and a five-minute walk to everything.
