December in Tangier is genuinely unpredictable, and that’s probably the most useful thing to know before you book. The city sits right at the top of Africa where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and that geography makes the weather its own complicated thing. You’re realistically looking at temperatures somewhere between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius, but the Atlantic wind is the real factor. Some days feel almost mild. Others feel raw in a way that surprises people expecting North Africa warmth. Pack layers you actually mean to wear, not just carry.

Rain is legitimately variable. December can be bone dry or genuinely wet, and nobody can tell you in advance which version you’ll get. The medina’s narrow streets flood easily and the uneven surfaces become slippery. Waterproof shoes aren’t overcautious here, they’re just sensible.

Here’s what’s genuinely good about going in December: the city is mostly yours. The summer crowds are completely gone, European tourists are rare, and the hustling around the Grand Socco and Petit Socco noticeably drops off. Café Hafa will have empty seats with that impossible strait view. The medina feels like a place people actually live rather than a performance of itself. That shift is real and worth something.

Almost everything stays open. Morocco doesn’t have the winter closure culture parts of southern Europe do. Restaurants, hammams, the Kasbah Museum, the American Legation, small shops, all operating normally. The food scene is consistent year-round and December is no exception.

Is it worth it? For solo travellers, couples, or anyone who prioritises atmosphere over beach weather, genuinely yes. If you’re hoping to sit outside in a t-shirt or are bringing kids who need sunshine to stay happy, probably wait until April.

The one practical tip worth flagging: book accommodation with heating confirmed, not just assumed. Some riads are beautiful and absolutely freezing at night because traditional construction wasn’t designed for warmth. Ask directly before you pay. Your December self will thank you.
