Here’s the honest picture: September in Tangier is genuinely one of the better times to visit, but it comes with a few things worth knowing before you book.

The weather sits in that sweet spot where summer hasn’t fully released its grip but isn’t suffocating anymore. Expect temperatures somewhere in the high twenties, occasionally nudging thirty. The Mediterranean coast keeps things slightly breezy, which saves you. Rainfall is minimal through most of September, though the very tail end of the month can see the odd shower as autumn starts knocking. Nothing that would derail a trip, just worth packing a light layer for evenings regardless.

Crowds are noticeably thinner than July and August, which matters enormously in the medina. Those months can feel genuinely claustrophobic in the narrow streets around the Grand Socco. By September the Moroccan summer holidaymakers have largely headed home, European tourists have thinned out, and the city feels more like itself again. Locals reclaim their favourite cafés. The pace drops slightly. You’ll actually be able to browse the souks without feeling like cattle moving through a chute.

Everything is open. Restaurants, riads, the Kasbah Museum, the caves of Hercules nearby. September doesn’t carry the complications of Ramadan or any significant local closures. You’re arriving when the city is operational and functioning without the peak season premium on patience.

Is it worth visiting in September? Yes, particularly if you want some atmospheric edge without being punished by heat or jostled constantly. It suits people who are curious about the city’s complicated, layered history, its literary connections to writers like Bowles and Burroughs, and who want to actually wander rather than survive.

It’s less ideal if you specifically want beach resort energy. For that, you’d want high summer.

**One practical tip**: book your riad accommodation a few weeks in advance anyway. The better small places in the medina still fill up in September, and the difference between a characterful traditional house and a disappointing concrete room is enormous in Tangier.
