# Taormina in May: Honestly Worth It

May is probably the sweet spot for Taormina, and most people who’ve been will tell you the same thing. The summer crowds haven’t fully arrived yet, the temperatures are genuinely pleasant rather than punishing, and the town still feels like somewhere you can actually move around without wanting to cry.

At around 20 degrees, you’re looking at perfect sightseeing weather. Warm enough for a light dress or short sleeves by afternoon, cool enough that climbing up to the Greek Theatre doesn’t leave you completely destroyed. You’ll want a layer for evenings though – it drops noticeably once the sun goes down, especially if you’re sitting outside for dinner, which you absolutely should be doing.

The 46mm of rainfall sounds more alarming than it is. You’re not looking at weeks of grey drizzle. It tends to come in short, sharp bursts, occasionally spectacular thunderstorms over the sea. Carry a compact umbrella and don’t build your entire schedule around a specific afternoon. Most days are fine.

Crowds are present but manageable. The peak coach tour traffic hits late morning, so if you want the Greek Theatre and that famous terrace view to yourself, get there when it opens. By 11am it’s noticeably busier. Restaurants, bars, and most attractions are fully open by May – you’re not dealing with the closed-for-season problem that catches people out in March or early April.

The beach situation is real though. Mazzarò and Isola Bella are accessible and the water looks gorgeous, but 20 degrees means swimming is for the committed rather than the casual. If beaches are your main goal, you’d probably be happier in July.

**Who should go in May:** Anyone who wants culture, food, walking, and views without heat exhaustion or peak-summer prices and chaos. Couples, older travellers, anyone who wilts above 28 degrees.

**Practical tip:** Book the Greek Theatre in advance online. It sells out on busy days and the queue in person is genuinely annoying when you could have avoided it entirely.
