# Tavira in April: What It’s Actually Like

April is one of those months where Tavira gets genuinely lovely without tipping into the chaotic. The temperature sits around 19-20°C, which means comfortable walking weather – warm enough for a light lunch outside, cool enough that you’re not sweating through your shirt by 10am. You’ll want a jacket for evenings, no question.

The 30mm of rain sounds alarming on paper but it typically arrives as a few sharp showers rather than a week of grey drizzle. You might lose an afternoon to it. You probably won’t lose a day. The light after rain in the Algarve is genuinely beautiful, so there’s that.

Crowds are refreshingly manageable. The town hasn’t fully woken up for summer yet. You can actually get a table at the good restaurants without planning military operations around it. The older Portuguese visitors tend to come through in April, which gives the place a more authentic feel than the July version of itself.

Almost everything is open. Some smaller seasonal spots might still be warming up, but the churches, the market, the Roman bridge, the ferry across to Ilha de Tavira – it all functions. The island beach is accessible but properly quiet, which is either perfect or pointless depending on why you’re visiting. If you’re hoping for beach holiday vibes, April probably still feels a bit thin. If you’re here for the town itself, the food, the architecture, the Ria Formosa, you’ll have a genuinely good time.

It’s worth it for: couples, slower travellers, anyone who hates crowds, people who care more about eating well than lying on a beach.

Less ideal for: families needing reliable beach days, anyone who needs wall-to-wall sun to feel like they’re on holiday.

**Practical tip:** The Easter period can spike unexpectedly busy, and accommodation prices jump with it. If your April trip falls outside Easter week, you’ll often find better rates and a calmer atmosphere. Worth checking those specific dates before you book.
