# Thassos in December: Honest Thoughts

Let me be straight with you: December is about as far from peak Thassos as you can get, and whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, sunny days that feel almost mild, perfect for walking through olive groves without sweating through your shirt. You might also get grey, relentless drizzle and the kind of damp cold that gets into everything. Nobody can promise you which version you’ll experience, and don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Pack layers, bring a waterproof, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

What you’ll find on the ground is a deeply quiet island. And I mean *quiet*. Most of the tavernas, hotels, and beach bars shut completely for winter, particularly in the smaller coastal villages. Limenas, the main town, keeps some life going – a few cafes will be open, locals will be doing their thing, and you can still walk around the ancient ruins and the old harbour without a single tour group in sight. That part is genuinely lovely. The Archaeological Museum is typically open, and the forested mountain interior offers some excellent hiking if the weather cooperates.

Is it worth going? For most people honestly, probably not as a primary destination. If you’re a serious hiker, someone who gets claustrophobic in crowds and just wants empty landscapes with a good book, or you’re combining it with Kavala on the mainland, then December has real appeal. The ferry from Keramoti still runs, though less frequently.

If you’re dreaming of turquoise water, open restaurants, and that classic Greek island atmosphere, you’ll find the skeleton of something wonderful but none of the flesh. It can feel a little melancholy walking past shuttered tavernas.

**Practical tip:** Ring ahead before you go. Seriously, call any accommodation you’re considering and just ask what’s actually open nearby. Locals will tell you the truth and potentially save you from arriving to find your entire village closed for winter.
