Visiting Thassos in May

# Thassos in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is one of those months where Thassos is genuinely lovely but comes with a few caveats worth knowing before you book.

The weather is warm without being brutal. You’re typically looking at daytime temperatures somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, which feels absolutely perfect for walking, exploring, and sitting outside with a coffee or a cold beer. Evenings can still drop off noticeably though, so pack a layer you actually mean to use. Rainfall is a bit unpredictable in early May especially – you can get a few rainy days scattered through the month without much warning, so don’t plan an itinerary that completely falls apart if one morning turns grey. By late May things tend to stabilise considerably.

The crowds situation is genuinely one of May’s strongest selling points. The island hasn’t fully switched into summer mode yet, so you’re not fighting for space on the beach or queuing for tavernas. The famous marble beaches like Marble Beach and Aliki still feel like they belong to you rather than half of central Europe. That said, this is a double-edged sword.

Some smaller restaurants, beach bars, and accommodation options are still opening up or finding their feet. You might arrive to find your preferred spot not quite ready yet, particularly in the first two weeks. The main villages and towns like Limenas and Limenaria are functional and welcoming, but don’t expect everything to be running at full capacity.

**Who should go in May?** Couples, walkers, anyone interested in the ancient sites, photographers, and people who genuinely hate crowds. It’s not the month for party-seekers or anyone whose trip depends entirely on guaranteed beach weather every single day.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. The good smaller guesthouses and studios fill up faster than you’d expect even in shoulder season, because the people who know Thassos specifically seek out May for exactly these reasons. You’re not alone in wanting the quiet version.

Worth it? Honestly, yes, for the right person.
