# Thessaloniki in December: The Honest Version

Look, December in Thessaloniki is not the version you see on Instagram. The waterfront promenade that looks so dreamy in photos? You’ll be walking it with your jacket collar turned up against a damp, grey wind coming off the Thermaic Gulf. Nearly 9 degrees and 65mm of rain means you’ll get proper cold, wet days mixed with the occasional crisp sunny afternoon that makes everything feel worth it.

Here’s the thing though – this city in winter is genuinely interesting. The Christmas market around Aristotelous Square is legitimately charming rather than corporate, and the locals actually use it. You’re not shuffling through crowds of tourists clutching mulled wine for a photo. You’re standing next to someone’s grandmother doing her actual shopping.

Crowds are minimal. Hotels are cheap. The museums – and Thessaloniki has excellent ones, particularly the Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Culture Museum – are uncrowded and unhurried. You can spend real time in front of things without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. Restaurants are operating for local trade, which means staff have time for you and the food feels less performative.

What’s closed? Some rooftop bars, a few touristy seasonal spots. Honestly nothing that matters much.

Is it worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you’re a history person, a food person, or someone who genuinely enjoys a city operating on its own terms rather than performing for visitors, December Thessaloniki delivers. The tavernas are warm, the bougatsa shops are doing serious business, and the city’s Byzantine churches feel appropriately atmospheric in low winter light. If you need beach weather and guaranteed sunshine to enjoy yourself, go somewhere else and come back in June.

**One practical tip:** Pack waterproof shoes, not just water-resistant ones. The stone pavements and marble surfaces get genuinely slippery when wet, and you will spend meaningful time on foot. Wet socks on day one will colour your entire trip.

It’s a real city in winter. That’s either exactly what you want or it isn’t.
