Visiting Trapani in March
# Trapani in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Trapani is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. You might land to bright blue skies and 16°C with a warm wind rolling off the salt pans. You might spend three days watching rain hammer the harbour. Western Sicily catches whatever the Mediterranean throws at it this time of year, and that’s just the reality. Pack layers, bring a waterproof, and adjust your expectations accordingly.
What you actually get, weather aside, is a town that still largely belongs to itself. The cruise ships haven’t arrived yet. The main piazza doesn’t feel like an obstacle course. You can sit in a bar, order a granita and a brioche for breakfast, and have the owner actually talk to you rather than process you. That version of Trapani is genuinely lovely, and March is one of the last months you’ll find it before summer changes the equation.
Most things are open, though some smaller restaurants and boat operators keep reduced hours or close randomly on weekdays. The Egadi Islands ferry runs, but day trips to Favignana or Levanzo depend heavily on sea conditions. Don’t build your entire trip around a specific island day without a backup plan. The salt pans and windmills are atmospheric in any weather, arguably more so under a dramatic grey sky than a postcard-blue one.
Easter falls in March or April, and if you’re there for Holy Week, Trapani’s processions are among the most extraordinary in all of Sicily. The Misteri procession specifically is worth serious effort to witness. Crowds do appear for that, so accommodation books up early.
Is it worth going? For independent travellers who prefer quiet streets, reasonable prices, and authentic atmosphere over guaranteed sunshine, yes, absolutely. For families needing reliable beach weather or people whose happiness depends on sunshine, wait until May.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation somewhere central to the old town. If the weather turns bad, being able to walk to good food without getting soaked in a taxi queue makes a significant difference to your mood.
