Elounda sits on the northeastern tip of Crete, quietly doing its own thing while the rest of the island contends with package tourists and overpriced tavernas. This is where Greek shipping magnates and European royalty have been retreating for decades, and the place has retained an unhurried, almost private quality that feels increasingly rare in the Mediterranean. If you’re looking for wild nightlife or Instagram-famous cliffside infinity pools with queues out the door, you’re in the wrong place. If you want to swim in a shallow, almost lake-calm bay with a haunted island on the horizon and a good glass of wine waiting afterwards, you’re exactly where you should be.
The honest version of Elounda is this: it’s beautiful but undramatic. The village itself is modest, a handful of decent restaurants around a small harbour, a few boat operators, not much else. The real draw is the setting and the pace. The bay is genuinely extraordinary, protected and clear, warm enough from late May and still perfect through October. Spinalonga, the Venetian fortress that served as Europe’s last active leper colony until 1957, sits just offshore and is worth a morning regardless of whether you’ve read Victoria Hislop’s novel that made it famous. Go early before the tour boats arrive from Heraklion.
The resort strip south of the village is where the serious money lives. Blue Palace is consistently excellent, with villas spilling down towards the water and staff who seem to genuinely enjoy their work. Elounda Beach Hotel is older, more established, the kind of place that attracts guests who’ve been coming back for twenty years. You don’t need to be staying at either to appreciate the area, but budget accordingly if you are.
What most visitors miss is the drive inland towards Kritsa and the Lasithi Plateau. The coastal strip can feel hermetically sealed, all sunbeds and room service, and the mountainous interior is a completely different Crete, villages that feel entirely unchanged, elderly men playing backgammon, olive groves that go on forever.
Elounda suits couples, older travellers and anyone who values quiet over stimulation. May and June offer ideal conditions before temperatures peak, while September and October bring softer light, emptier roads and the particular melancholy of a season winding down, which, if you’re honest, suits the place perfectly.
