# Trogir in December: The Honest Version
Let’s be real about the weather first. Twelve degrees sounds manageable until you’re walking those narrow stone streets with a damp wind coming off the Adriatic. It’s not freezing, but it’s grey, it’s often wet, and that 113mm of rainfall means you will get rained on at some point. Pack a proper waterproof, not a fashion jacket.
Here’s the thing though: Trogir in December is genuinely lovely if you’re the right kind of traveller.
The crowds essentially vanish. That UNESCO old town, which becomes a slow-moving human traffic jam in July, is suddenly yours. You can actually stop in the middle of the Riva and look at the cathedral without someone’s selfie stick in your face. The locals reclaim the place, cafes become actual neighbourhood spots rather than tourist traps, and the whole island feels like a real town again rather than a stage set.
What’s open is the honest question. Most restaurants stay open, though hours get shorter and a few close entirely or take irregular breaks. The cathedral of St Lawrence is accessible, the city walls are walkable, and the old town’s architecture doesn’t care what season it is – it’s still one of the best-preserved medieval complexes in the Adriatic. What closes is the beach bar scene, the boat trips, most excursion operators, and any restaurant that survived purely on summer footfall.
Is it worth visiting? For history lovers, photographers, slow travellers, or anyone doing a broader Croatia winter trip – yes, absolutely. For people wanting sunshine, swimming, and buzzy nightlife – genuinely, no. Come back in May or September.
The combination of low prices, empty streets, and that particular melancholy beauty of an old stone town in winter light is actually its own reward.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation with heating confirmed in advance. Some smaller guesthouses effectively hibernate in winter with minimal heating, and a cold room after a rainy day of walking is miserable. Check specifically, don’t assume.
